ياO باكيyou who weep for الدارthe dwelling بكاظمةٍat Kazimah
وبكاءand weeping for الدارthe dwelling منfrom الكمدgrief
O you who weep for the dwelling at Kazimah,
O you who cry over an abode with suppressed weeping
and weeping for the dwelling springs from grief.
And the crying over an abode is from anguish
أفنيتyou exhausted الدمعthe tears علىover حجرٍa stone
وأضعتand you squandered الصبرpatience علىover وتدa tent peg
You exhausted your tears over a stone,
I have wasted tears over a rock
and squandered your patience over a tent peg.
And lost patience over a tent peg
فاذخرهso save it مخافةfor fear of نازلةٍa calamity
أأمنتdo you feel safe from اليومtoday صروفthe reversals of غدtomorrow
So save it, for fear of a calamity:
So store it fearing an affliction may descend
do you feel safe today from tomorrow’s reversals?
Did you feel secure today from the turns of tomorrow?
هيit عينكyour eye لوif ملnot (likely لم) تجنit sinned لماwould not have
عاقبتyou punished جفونكyour eyelids بالسهدwith sleeplessness
It is your eye: had it not sinned, you would not have
It is your eye that had it not weep
punished your eyelids with sleeplessness.
Your eyelids would have punished you with wakefulness
فأتيتso you came to الماءthe water تحولهyou divert it
والماءand water منيةdeath ملwhoever (likely من) صدis thirsty
So you came to the water to divert it,
So you came to the water to change it
and water is death to the thirsty.
While the water is a demise that did not obstruct
فالويلso woe لنفسكto your soul إنif وردتit comes to drink
والويلand woe لهاto it إنif لمnot تردit comes to drink
Woe, then, to your soul if it comes to drink,
So woe to yourself if you return
and woe to it if it does not.
And woe to it if you do not come back
أقبلتI approached فقلتso I said أقبلهI shall kiss him
ولوeven if أنthat الموتdeath علىon الرصدthe watch
I approached and said, “I shall kiss him,
I came and said I will kiss him
even if death lies in wait.”
Even if death lies in ambush
فرشفتthen I sipped مجاجةthe saliva of مبتسمٍa smiling mouth
أشهىmore enticing وألذand more delicious منthan الشهدhoney
Then I sipped the saliva of a smiling mouth,
So I sipped from a cup smiling
more enticing and more delicious than honey.
More delicious and sweet than honey
ياO أينwhere الصبرpatience فأنشدهthat I may seek it
وعسايand perhaps I أدلmay be guided علىto الجلدfortitude
Oh, where is patience, that I may seek it?
O where is patience so I may recite it
And perhaps I may be guided to fortitude.
And my staff to point to endurance
ظعنdeparted الأحبابthe loved ones وعندهمand with them
قلبيmy heart سلبوهthey stole it ولمand did not يعدreturn
The loved ones departed, and with them is
The loved ones blamed me and with them
my heart: they stole it, and it has not returned.
Is my heart they took and did not return
وبرانيand wasted me away السقمsickness بهمbecause of them
فبقيتso I was left بلاwithout قلبٍa heart وبلاand without جسدa body
And sickness wasted me away because of them,
And the sickness alienated me from them
so I was left without a heart and without a body.
So I remained without a heart and without a body
