O master of the heart, you know more than

Any physician about the heart's malady.

If I have sinned in loving you, then indeed

Forsaking me has become the punishment for the sin.

I am indeed content with distance from you, if

    You prefer it to closeness.

And your bitter estrangement, if you are pleased with it,

Is sweeter to me than your sweet union.

And to one who reproached me for loving you, I said,

Before hearing his words and reproach:

Rise, O my reproacher, for your heart is not

Visited by the whisperings of love.

Has sickness worn out your body, or mine?

And is it your heart that is mad with love, or mine?

Let me die of love's malady, for how

Sweet, in love, is the death of the lovelorn!
