Lo, by the One who bestowed passion upon the heart,
By Him who guided love into my heart
The herd's eyes have surely bewitched me in the protected pasture.
Your eyes have fascinated me, O graceful deer

They shot at us, yet from languid eyelids
They looked at me, though from sickly eyelids
That knew love's place in the ardent lover's liver.
And I knew the place of love from my inner pain
وأطلعنand they revealed منfrom سجفthe curtains of الخدورthe women's chambers أهلةًcrescent moons

And they revealed crescent moons from the curtains of their chambers;
They gazed from under the eyelids’ shades
They made the humps of fine-bred camels beauty's sky.
Making the sky of beauty like bright stars

And I did not know that the gazelles of ʿĀlij
I did not know that the deer of the highland
Have their pastures between canopies and veils.
Graze between remoteness and closeness

Through parting, they have surely taken from every lover
They have taken with separation every lover
The remnant of a soul that never recovers from love.
A remaining soul that does not awake from love

It saw them bearing no arrows,
They saw him carrying arrows unsheathed
And it did not know that the quivers were within the face-veils.
Unaware that gazelles are in the burrows

And had the yearning lover known that his death
Had the ardent lover known that his dove
Was with the caravan, he would not have greeted the caravan.
Did not greet the caravan with “Peace be upon you”
ولماand when رأينthey saw القربnearness عوناًan aid علىto الجفاcoldness
لذيfor the possessor of الحبlove سلطنthey gave dominion to البعادdistance علىover القربnearness
And when they saw nearness as an aid to coldness
When they saw nearness aiding against disdain
For the lover, they gave distance dominion over nearness.
For the sake of love, they imposed distance upon nearness
فياso, oh قربnearness ماwhat is بينbetween الصبابةardent longing والحشىand the breast
وياand, oh بعدdistance ماwhat is بينbetween المسرةjoy والقلبand the heart
So, how near longing is to the breast!
O closeness between youthfulness and graying hair
And how far joy is from the heart!
O remoteness between joyfulness and the heart
وماand not صدdrove away عنيfrom me النومsleep مثلlike مهفهفٍa slender-waisted one
كأنas though بهin him معنىًa quality منof الغصنthe bough الرطبfresh and supple
And nothing has driven sleep from me like a slender-waisted beauty,
Nothing has kept me from sleep like a groan
As though there were in him something of a fresh, supple bough.
As if it has meaning from a moist branch
ثنىhe folded back عنfrom نفيسprecious الدرpearls فضلthe loose end لثامهof his face-veil
كماjust as افترsmiled بدرٌa full moon فيin الدجنةthe darkness عنrevealing شهبbright stars
He folded back his face-veil's loose end from precious pearls,
He folded his perfume’s excess like a garment
As a full moon smiles in the darkness, revealing bright stars.
As the full moon folded its light in the darkness
تقلدhe girded himself with منfrom ألحاظهhis glances مثلthe like of عضبهhis keen sword
فأصبحso he came to يعتدcount الجفونthe eyelids منamong القربthe scabbards
He wore a blade of his glances to match his keen sword,
He wore of his glances like an unsheathed sword
So he came to count eyelids among the scabbards.
So the eyelids began to fear his nearness
وقدand indeed كنتI was أخشىI fear السيفthe sword والسيفand the sword واحدٌone
فماso what حيلتيmy recourse إذnow that قلدgirded العضبthe keen sword بالعضبwith the keen sword
And I had feared the sword when the sword was only one;
I used to fear the sword, and the sword was one
So what recourse have I, now that blade is girded with blade?
What can I do, if he wore sword upon sword?
خليليmy two friends هلwill ألقىI find منfrom الدهرTime مسعداًa helper

يعرفنيteaches me مرthe bitterness of الزمانtime منfrom العذبthe sweet
My two friends, shall I find in Time someone to aid me,
My friend, will I ever find happiness
Who will teach me to distinguish time's bitterness from its sweetness?
That will know me, after the sweetness of time?
