سله من سكر الهوى كيف صحا

فسقى الدمع الجفون القرحا

Ask him how he sobered from passion’s intoxication,

and tears watered his wounded eyelids.

زاده في الحب وجداً بكم

لائمٌ لام عليكم ولحا

His longing for you in love was heightened

by a reprover who blamed him over you and rebuked him.

فاستلذ الهجر واستدني النوى

وارتضى السخط وخان النصحا

So he savored estrangement and drew separation near,

and accepted displeasure and betrayed his counselors.

وسقى الأطلال من أجفانه

مدمعاً لولاكم ما سفحا

And he watered the ruins from his eyelids

with tears he would not have shed but for you.

لا رعاه الله إن مال إلى

سلوةٍ بعدكم أو جنحا

May God not protect him if he turns toward

consolation after you, or inclines to it.

وصحيح الشوق مصدوع الحشا

نطق الدمع به فافتضحا

And one whose longing is true, whose heart is shattered—

his tears spoke of him, and he was exposed.

بات لا يطرقه طيفكم

رب طيفٍ ضل لما سنحا

He passed the night unvisited by your phantom;

many a phantom went astray when it appeared.
