Do not despair over your love-stricken heart,

and beware the pupils of the wide-eyed gazelles.

Beware of them: every place a glance strikes

tells you that behind it lies death's menace.

    لقد ائتمنت عليه غير أمين

    In folly, you charged your gaze with guarding your heart;

you have indeed entrusted it to one untrustworthy.

    فلذاك أقعد عن طلاب ديوني

    And passion saw the victim whom love had slain;

and therefore I refrain from claiming my dues.

Do not reproach me for the flood of my tears,

for tears quench the burning thirst of the sorrowful.

The clouds were miserly; at no familiar haunt did I alight

without untying over it the knots of my eyelids.

    أنا بالحياة عليه غير ضنين

    And in my heart, O my two companions, is a pampered beloved;

I do not begrudge him my life.

And by your father, were you given wine and his saliva to drink,

you would not know which was the daughter of the vine.

And if a Bedouin maiden in the sands of ʿĀlij

promised union, my excessive madness would subside.

Fair maidens—when coquetry sways their figures,

the bān boughs in Nayrin grow still.

I never ceased visiting them, charming maidens,

like stars in the jet-black nights,

until I heard their curtained chambers say to me:

"Have you seen the like of my crescents and my boughs?"

And is it not enough that I see myself standing,

my hope at your gate, O Salah al-Din,

reciting the qualities of your glory, stringing for you

something like a necklace of hidden pearls?

I am truly unequal to your praises, which

are too exalted to be defined or given form.

This kingdom submitted to you after its return,

and yielded willingly to your hands, without resistance.

And you were indeed the first to set its pillar firm,

and answer the summons of its auspicious king.
