And sweetest to me is when there shines

the sky of the cup with the sun of wine.

And a supple youth, soft as the wind’s back,

whose eyelids break the sheath of my endurance,

as though his cheek held water and fire,

from which the night of his cheek-down was born,

and whose eyes grow drunk on wine within him—

for in his glances is the trace of a hangover—

served you, against the blushing pomegranate blossoms

of cheeks, wine like pomegranate blossoms.

I flee to you from the trickle of gifts,

and swim in the deep waters of your bounty.

And you, when the stars of spearheads rise

in the darkness of the night of dust,

are indeed fathers of noble deeds and lofty honors,

    and sons of ravening lions.

For you are the sun, veiled by no night,

however dark; and the full moon, too exalted to vanish.
