They spoke truly: for lovers' souls there is no

blood-requital from the eyes that slay.

    فامزج الدمع بالدم المهراق

    You are love-stricken, and that is the foremost of mounts;

so mingle tears with the blood poured out.

O languid-lidded one, the sickness of

wide eyes is the health of lovers.

The days have kept me from welcoming

a visit from your night-visiting phantom.

Oh, may God watch over the nights gone by

at al-Hima, when time was sweet to taste.

And may my streaming tears water them, when

the tears of the rain-rich cloud do not flow.

I am not one who lays upon a burning liver

his hand, or upon a fluttering heart.

They lied! Have you seen a lover's lifeblood

ever flow in the wake of spilt tears?

Passion is only this: a man's soul wavering

with longing between the breast and collarbones.

And so I spend the night awaiting the dream-

vision, and yearn for the lightning of the folk of al-Biraq.
