عذلاً أضر على الجوانح من لظى
O you who set my heart's folds ablaze with reproach,
O one who is burning with love during separation
A reproach more harmful to the ribs than blazing fire.
A love more painful to the soul than flames
ماnot الوجدpassionate longing إلاexcept أنto تقبلyou kiss مبسماًa smiling mouth
ما الوجد إلا أن تقبل مبسماً
خصراًcool فيوسعso it gives ample space to نارthe fire of شوقكyour longing ملتظىa place to blaze
خصراً فيوسع نار شوقك ملتظى
Passion is nothing but kissing a smiling mouth,
Happiness is only to accept a smile
Cool, yet giving your longing's fire more room to blaze.
A waist which expands the fire of your longing, blazing
ماnot نامslept عزميmy resolve عنaway from معاودةresuming السرىnight travel
ما نام عزمي عن معاودة السرى
إلاexcept that وجدتI found منin الصبابةardent longing موقظاan awakener
إلا وجدت من الصبابة موقظا
Whenever my resolve to journey again by night fell asleep,
My determination did not sleep from returning to the beloved
I found in ardent longing something to wake it.
Except I found the youth had awakened it
جمعhe combined المهابةawe-inspiring dignity فيin طلاقةthe cheerfulness of وجههhis face
جمع المهابة في طلاقة وجهه
كملاًin full measure فكانso he was الحازمthe resolute one المتيقظاthe vigilant one
كملاً فكان الحازم المتيقظا
He combined awe-inspiring dignity with a cheerful face,
He combined majesty in the radiance of his face
Both in full measure; thus he was resolute and vigilant.
As if he were the resolute, vigilant perfect man
وثناand turned نداهhis generosity لهtoward him ثنايmy praise فلنso ... will not أرىI am seen
وثنا نداه له ثناي فلن أرى
يوماًon any day بغيرwith anything other than مديحهpraise of him متلفظاuttering
يوماً بغير مديحه متلفظا
And his bounty turned my praise toward him, so I shall never be seen
I praised him, so his praise will never leave my tongue
On any day uttering anything but his praise.
I will never speak a day without praising him
