Are these laughing pearls, or mouths?
Are they smiles or lips
And pitch-black nights, or tresses?
And nights around you or hair

And suns that seem
their faces unveiled, or full moons?
To be traveling, their faces veiled

يا حسن ما كتمن الخدور
The curtained chambers hid them from us on the morning of parting.
She hid them from us after separation
Oh, the beauty of what those chambers hid!
Oh beauty, the veils did not hide them

And they appeared to us so we were deceived that
their throats had been garlanded with their pearly smiles.
The lips from them had withered

They proudly drew back the canopies’ curtains,
Destroyers of the firmness of food wandering
and had screens of reed spears around them.
And they have curtains of gossamer

They stood to bid farewell, and the earth, beneath the weight
They stopped to say farewell and the earth was shaking
of mutual lament on the day of parting, heaved.
From the weight of grief on the day of parting

Then they walked away while the one separated by distance
trod upon the warriors’ souls.

Oh my robe of happiness, lend me
after they are gone, shall I lend the robe of sleep?
After them the garb of sleep

My life is the bitterness of living; and nights
The joy of life soured, and the nights
sometimes have their serenity clouded by distress.
Were disturbed by turbulence

He cried out with his sword drawn among the foes,
He called out with the sword, praying against enemies
and their heads and throats answered him.
So she answered him hesitantly and with parched lips

If only souls were given safety

And the necks seemed like trills of speech,
It was as if the gleams were the song of birds
and the swords like a hidden pronoun within them.
And as if the swords had conscience within them
