    And a slender-waisted, smooth-cheeked, dusky one,

Like a Khatti spear—because of him, I became the subject of people's evening talk.

Hearts surely love him, and have never ceased

To be in peril from him, whether he sways or struts.

And it was no wonder, given his loveliness,

That beauty should unite in him the bough and the moon.

Your glances ravaged the garden of his cheek,

So he rose, devouring with his gaze, avenging himself.

And my heart said to me, when it fell into his hand:

This is the one you reproached me over—so what do you think?

    Let me tear away my veil in my love for him;

And I care not whether people blame me or excuse me.
