Your favor is sweeter than the taste of union

to one consumed by love after long delay.

But to one who seeks lofty honors,

it is sweeter than mutual hatred among men.

Wish upon me what the fates wish upon you

    when coats of mail overwhelm the blades;

for you fill aspirations with firm resolve

and eradicate the cause of incurable disease.

And how could the nights reach your rocky height

when noble deeds and lofty honors keep you company?

And your words cannot be matched by deeds,

and your deeds cannot be matched by words.

And your smiling welcome to petitioners, without a gift,

is dearer to petitioners than a gift.

And dread of you in skulls and necks

is sharper than polished Indian swords.

    Horsemen eye you from afar,

so they choose death over combat.

And you disdain to duel with them, though they once

reckoned bravery to lie in single combat.

You mingle with them without drawing a sword,

as though you were one of them in every circumstance,

hoping to cloak yourself in keen-edged swords

over a garment of the points of long spears.

And had the greeter known what you wished for,

he would then have greeted you with long spears.

Hope in you surpasses the aspirations of every promise,

and your promise surpasses the bounty of every fortune.
