هلاَّwhy did you not خلوتَyou went aside بعذليto reproach me يومَwhen تَنْصَحُنيyou advise me
انَّindeed النصيحةَadvice بينَamong القومِthe people تَقْرِيْعُrebuke
Why did you not reproach me in private when you advised me?
Indeed, advice before others is a rebuke.
أَوor خِفتَyou feared أَنْthat يتعاطىhe might assert فضلsuperiority حُجتِهhis argument
مُبَّرءٌblameless عِرضُهhis honor باللومِby reproach مَلْسُوْعُstung
Or did you fear that he might assert the superiority of his argument—
a man of unblemished honor, stung by reproach?
يجريhe runs معwith الحقِtruth مجنوناًmad بِرُمَّتِهِin his entirety
والحَقُّand truth تابعُهhis follower فيin الحقِtruth متبُوْعُfollowed
He runs with truth, wholly mad;
And truth is his follower—in truth, it is the one followed.
صنيعةًa favor خِفتَyou feared انthat تَخفيremain hidden فجئتَso you came بهاwith it
لقدindeed أَضعتَyou wasted وبعضُand some الحِفْظِsafekeeping تَضْييْعُwaste
A favor you feared would remain hidden, so you brought it forth;
You have indeed wasted it; some safekeeping is waste.
لاno خيرَgood فيin طَمَعٍgreed يُرزيdebases ولاnor شِبَعٍsatiety
يُطْغيbreeds arrogance وخيرُand a better قرينٍcompanion منهُماthan either of them الجُوْعُhunger
There is no good in greed that debases, nor in satiety
that breeds arrogance; hunger is a better companion than either.
ياO زفرةًa sigh قَدَحَتْkindled نارfire الهمومِcares بهاthrough it
انَّindeed الهمومَcares لهاfor them فيin الصَّدرِthe breast ينْبُوْعُa wellspring
O sigh, through which the fire of cares was kindled!
Indeed, cares have a wellspring in the breast.
قطعتَyou severed حبلَa cord اِخاءٍbrotherhood كانwas مُتَّصلاًunbroken
وكلُّand everyone مَنْwho قطعَcuts off الاخوانَthe brothers مقطُوْعُcut off
You severed a cord of brotherhood that had been unbroken;
And everyone who cuts off his brothers is himself cut off.
