O you whose eye sees every height as low,

What did you say to Time when it came complaining of us?

For we have no need of its demands,

And see nothing in it that can spare us the need for you.

Your enemies said, when their patience was exhausted:

No stratagem against us works better than his advance.

    وبالسَّعَادةِ لا بالخيلِ تَغزونَا

    By the good fortune of your destiny, not by an army, you defeat us;

By good fortune, not by horses, you attack us.

I have come to pity kinsmen left neglected,

Though once my kin could count on me.

Convey, as you have been charged, reproach or a rebuke

To a brother in Persia: we strike at him, and he at us.

Why does generosity draw strangers close to us,

While kinship does not bring our own relatives near?

If our hands lent one another aid,

Our enemies would find no opening among us when they sought us.

Come, let us forget what we said and what was said to us,

And not blame those who incline toward us for their words of praise.

Let us hold the hard spearpoints back from our own vital parts

And turn their edges against our enemies.

Even if all we had were this: that our last should be measured

By the deeds of our first, we would be blessed.

    يَوَدُّ لو بالردى قاضتْ نواعينَا

    Pay no heed to one who, unseen, rejoices in our division;

He wishes our death notices had come with news of our deaths.

    وَصَفْقَةَ البيعِ اِلاَّ كانَ مَغْبُونَا

    Whenever danger came, he kept apart;

Whenever there was a bargain, he came away cheated.

Like al-Simāk, you see him forever bearing a spear,

Yet see no one wounded by that spear.

And if you refuse, we stand among its supports

On a height that no hands but ours have raised.

When the white blades of armored men confront it

On the day of battle, victory is assured.

Alas for the swords! So great is our love for them

That we almost sheathe them among ourselves, before reaching the enemy.

Why should our needs not keep them hidden,

When the fear they plant in people's hearts is enough for us?

If you hope to seize our nose ring by force,

Then lead Suhayl bound to al-Ayyūq.

Were it not for pride, and for the shame of helplessness,

Anyone seeking the heights would be mad.

Go toward death slowly or in haste:

If we do not meet it, death will meet us.

The roads to Buṣrā have changed beyond recognition,

And the horses have grown weary of our cooks and herdsmen.

Perhaps, after resting in their stalls,

One day they will cast us down upon the short spear shafts.

Among us is the resolute man whose bounty lent generosity a hand

And whose giving lent glory a noble brow.

His horses are forever sweeping through al-Qayrawān,

And other horses of his sweep through China.

The people's treasures came rushing to you,

As though dominion had been stored away for you.

    فما أَفادَ بها الدُّنيا ولا الدِّينَا

    A trust whose due was betrayed by fortune;

It brought benefit neither to this world nor to religion.

I tested him and found his judgment well weighed.

May every quest find you, at its end,

Victorious at the farthest reaches of the earth and blessed.

With every night and day whose sunrise breaks,

May God increase your honor and strength.

Trust in God, whose ways you have experienced

In what you desired, and put your doubts aside.

    والحَينُ يكمُنُ في سعي الفَتى حِينَا

    They were overcome only at the places where they fell;

And sometimes doom lies hidden in a young man's striving.
