خَليليَّmy two friends انْif قالتْshe says بثنيةُButhayna مالهُwhat ails him?
تَخَّلفَhe stayed away عنfrom وَعْدِيmy appointed meeting فقولاthen you two say لهالَهَاto her: he was distracted
My two friends, if Buthayna asks, “Why has he
Missed his tryst with me?” tell her, “He was distracted.
سَهَاhe forgot وهوwhile he is مشغولٌpreoccupied لعظمِbecause of the gravity of الذيthat which بهafflicts him
ومنand whoever باتَspends the night طولَthroughout الليلِthe night يَرعَىwatching السُّهَاسَهاSuhā—grew forgetful
He forgot, preoccupied by the gravity of his plight;
Whoever spends all night watching Suhā grows forgetful.”
بثينةButhayna تزرىputs to shame بالغَزالةِthe sun فيin الضُّحىthe forenoon
اذاwhen برزتْshe appears لمnot تلقَyou find يوماًever بهاin it بهاradiance
Buthayna puts the sun to shame at forenoon;
When she appears, you never find any radiance in it.
بثينةُButhayna اِنْif ماستْshe sways يَلينُgrows supple قِوامُهاher figure
فانَّfor indeed قَضيبَthe bough of البانِthe bān tree فيin زهوِهَاher splendor زَهاgloried
When Buthayna sways, her figure grows supple;
For the bān-tree bough glories in her splendor.
وأَبصرتُand I saw طرفاًa gaze بالصَّابةِthrough passion (uncertain reading) آسراًtaking captive
وطرفاًand a gaze عنfrom السُّلوانِconsolation أَهلpeople of النُّهىreason نَهىforbade
And I saw a gaze taking captives [through passion?],
And a gaze that forbade the wise to find consolation.
وقالتْand she said وقدwhile already أسرعتُI hastened فيin السَّيرِthe journey نَحوهاtoward her
وجبتand became due (uncertain) قِفَاليmy return journey دونهاbefore her وسِهَامهَاand her arrows
And she said, as I hastened on my way toward her,
And my return became due, before her and her arrows [wording unclear].

فمنso whoever لمdoes not يهمbecome enraptured بالسُّكرِwith intoxication فيin صَفوهَافَهاits clarity—is witless
A wine of saliva, aged and then clarified—
So whoever does not yearn to be drunk on its clarity is witless.
