May you live as long as the sun and full moon,
The sun and moon obeyed you eternally
forever, through the days and all time.
Over days and time

And may destiny obey you as you direct it
Fate directed its course under your command
among people, through forbidding and commanding.
Among people, between prohibition and order

And if you went out for a need that arose
may success and the most auspicious omen attend you.
It would be for success and protection from harm

God has a well-known way with you,
God has a habit with you that's known
familiar to us in hardship and in ease.
In hardship, we find it, and in ease

They have tested you, and you proved their most steadfast,
They tested you, and you were the firmest
and the best fitted for occasions requiring patience.
And most deserving of perseverance

You stood at Al-Ahwaz blocking

Nothing there but keen blades
and spearheads like a vulture's flight feathers.
And arrows like the strikes of eagles

Your fervent ancestors sufficed you
from the sidelong glares of those red eyes.
Sparks from those red eyes

And you had no need of a plan to turn over
You had no need for changing thoughts
and revolve in the arena of thought:
Circling in the arena of ideas

a fortune that drives horses back onto their haunches
A grandfather who turns back raiding horses
and blunts the edge of white swords and brown spears.
And splits the edge of blades and spears

And I see the images of a critic wooed
within it by the south wind are waterskins of rain.
By the south competing with the north

Like cattle on the morning of slaughter

gap-toothed, never opening her lips in a smile.

who has forsaken women and the pleasure of wine.
Forsake women and wine's delight

in the breast, between the lungs and the throat.
