بقيتَmay you endure ولاand may not كانَexist الزمانُTime ولاand may not بقىendure
فنائِلُهُfor its bounty بَدْءٌa beginning ونَيْلُكَand your bounty مُنتَهىthe ultimate limit
May you endure, and may Time neither exist nor endure.
You remained, while time itself expired and ended;
For its bounty is a beginning, and yours the ultimate end.
Its beginning faded, while yours will never cease.
قدindeed أفنيتَyou have exhausted آماليmy hopes بجودِكَwith your generosity والمُنىand wishes

You have exhausted my hopes and wishes with your generosity,
You destroyed my hopes with your generosity, my wishes-
and made me generous until I had no need of wealth.
Made me rich, until I was free of all needs.
وصيرتَنيand you made me منfrom بعدِafter ماwhen كنتُI had been واقفاًstanding

أقولُI say لدهريto my Time كلّماwhenever جاءَit comes ههناhere
And, after I had stood, you made me
You made me, after having stood still, say-
say to my Time whenever it comes, 'Here!'
Whenever time comes here-depart! Begone!

So Nizar wished he could gladden Rabi‘a
Nizar was keen to please Rabia
with the news that you have wearied the destitute with gifts,
That you have made the destitute rich through God;

and that you never cease to be beneath a dust cloud
That you never leave a tent, rent
where Mashrafi swords are shattered against necks.
With swords through which Al-Musharrafiah was severed.

Hooves curled it up from the rock, and it began
Its folds curved from the rocks, so it rose high
to shield the horsemen from the blades' onslaught.
Repelling the horsemen, accustomed to running wildly.

When its eagles despair of a morsel,
When their hooves lost hope of the foals-
you lift armored men up to them on spears.
You raised the armored warriors up toward it on the spear points.

وخوفُكَand fear of you أمضىmore piercing منthan سيوفِكَyour swords فيinto العِدَىthe enemies
Your swords cut deeper into souls than death,
Your swords more deadly to souls than perdition,
and fear of you cuts deeper into enemies than your swords.
Your fear more fatal than your sword points to the foe.

And your night is unchanging dawn because of the blades,
Your night a morning that does not get obscured by the dust cloud,
and your dawn is lightless night because of the dust.
Your dawn a night that gleams not for all the hills.

And you are the one without whom generosity would be unknown,
You, without whom honor was not known
nor would the world exist, nor humankind be created.
Nor the world was, nor the creation made.

A youth whose eyelid shuns sleep's delight,
A prince whose eyelids eschew the pleasure of sleep,
as though sweet sleep were grit in his eyelid.
As though the sweetness of sleep in his lids were irritation.

Is your eye ailing, or is your sleeplessness a lover
Does your sentry frown, or does your pillow incline
jealously guarding your eyes against a touch of sleep?
Jealously at your eyes because of the decrepitude of old age?

And whoever's eyelids stay awake for noble deeds,
He whose eyes were deprived of sleep for glorious deeds
his eye watches the stars of glory in their sky.
His gaze shepherded among the stars in its expanse.

And the heart does not sleep while the eyelid is awake,
The heart cannot sleep while the eye is awake
nor are the eyes sheathed while the heart is unsheathed.
Nor sheathe the eyes while the heart is roused.
ألاbehold إنّindeed عينَthe eye of المرءِa person عُنوانُthe index of قَلبهِhis heart

Behold, a man's eye is the index of his heart,
Indeed the eye of a man reveals his heart
telling its secrets, whether he wishes it or not.
Reporting its secrets whether he wishes or not.
رأيتُI saw كريماًa generous man يأكلُeat الناسُthe people زادَهُhis provisions

I saw a generous man whose provisions people eat;
I saw a generous man whom people ate his provisions-
when they tire of his provisions, he tires of hunger.
If they wearied of their own provisions they wearied of (going on) living.

He sees what their eyes see, though his head is bowed,
He sees what their eyes see while he remains silent,
and what their eyes do not see, his eye sees.
And what their eyes do not see his eye does see.
فقلتُso I said سحابٌa cloud أسْتَظِلُّI take shelter بظِلّهbeneath its shade
ولاand not امترىI draw forth غيرَanything but المودةِaffection والهَوىand love
So I said, 'A cloud beneath whose shade I shelter,
So I said a cloud from whose shade I take shelter-
and from it I draw nothing but affection and love.'
Neither refusing affection and love nor bartering them.

So never before him had I seen life turned ascetic,
Before him I saw no hermit life of asceticism,
nor, before me, a thirsty man fleeing the rain.
Nor did I see, before myself, anyone flee from life.

To your view, Saif al-Dawla, care is inferior.

Only determination and the promise inferior to care.

So may you ever endure, wearing out Time's newness,
You continue to don the garment of time persisting,
and wear the robes of life without end.
And to wear the raiment of life endlessly.
