كلevery شيءٍthing سوىexcept القريضِpoetry يدُthe hand الساthe plun-
كل شيءٍ سوى القريضِ يدُ السا
لبِ-derer فيهin it أقوىstronger منthan المسلوبِthe plundered
لبِ فيه أقوى من المسلوبِ
In everything but poetry, the plunderer’s hand
All but poetry, the conqueror's hand
Is stronger than that of the plundered.
Is stronger than the despoiled.
واذاand when سُقتَyou drive هجمةًa herd of camels طلبوهاthey pursue it
واذا سُقتَ هجمةً طلبوها
فأَغارواthen they raid علىupon السَّوامِthe grazing livestock العذيْبِunwatered
فأَغاروا على السَّوامِ العذيْبِ
And when you drive a herd of camels, they pursue it,
And if a raid is led, they seek it,
Then raid the unwatered grazing herd.
So they descend on the slender-waisted gazelles.
وجدواthey found سكةَthe path الطريدةِof the driven-off herd أَعفىless taxing
وجدوا سكةَ الطريدةِ أَعفى
منthan قيامthe tending الراعيof the shepherd وجمعِand the gathering الكَسُوبِof the diligent earner
من قيام الراعي وجمعِ الكَسُوبِ
They find the path of the driven-off herd less taxing
They found the path of the fugitive more barren
Than the shepherd’s tending and the diligent earner’s gathering.
Than the shepherd's standing or the gathering of provisions.
ليسis not نظمُstringing الدرِpearls الذيthat لمnot يثقبbe pierced
ليس نظمُ الدرِ الذي لم يثقب
كنظامِlike the stringing الممرنof the already-worked المثقوبِpierced
كنظامِ الممرن المثقوبِ
Stringing pearls that have not been pierced is not
The stringing of pearls that have not been pierced
Like stringing those already worked and pierced.
Is not like that of the practiced piercer.
