I sold my joys and bade delight farewell

on the day she departed with the departing company—

    وقعَ الحَبلُ عليها فَنَصَلْ

    a sweet-voiced gazelle, filled with yearning;

the cord fell upon her, then slipped loose.

She appeared to us from beside the curtained chamber,

among full moons unveiled by the canopies.

What eye will behold her after us?

If only I could command the glances of eyes!

and consoled myself for a time with excuses.

    And I concealed love until it came to hate me;

and when an illness is concealed, it kills.

Time laughed and showed its teeth

through Baha al-Dawla, the most august king,

through a youth whom wishes never pass by.

Expectation halted at him and settled there.

He has handled most of your affairs for you—

young in years, discerning and in his prime.

He gave helplessness to those who spend nights talking of wishes,

and stripped from himself the garments of sloth.

He does not defer a day's deed until tomorrow,

and when he resolves upon a matter, he acts.

O son of him whose bounty embraced all mankind,

and whose example is cited among the people:

    قلَّ من يَحْمِلُه في الناسِ قَلْ

    truly, rule carries a crushing burden;

few among people bear it—few indeed.

Promise your eyes scant draughts of slumber,

and leave sleep to the women who wear anklets.

And make prudence a helper to the youth,

for a hero may be undone through might.

Strive never to separate the two,

for both help you attain your hope.

The foes' designs against you are not checked

by ornate speech and patched-together stratagems,

that gathers its stride like a lean-haunched wolf,

and a spearhead like a lamp in the darkness,

that adorned the sides of a straight shaft.

The hollow of the foe's throat does to it

what shame does to the cheek.

    عُقِلَ العِزُّ بأَطرافِ الأَسَلْ

    Whoever bears it fears no humiliation;

glory is tethered to the points of spears.

O you most deserving of victory among men, and you who

offered fairness from yourself and poured it forth:
