    مَحَتْهَا السَّواري والرِّياحُ الرَّوامسُ

    Her dwelling-traces at al-Abraqayn lie faded;

Night-traveling rain clouds and dust-burying winds have erased them.

Today you have nothing of them but remembrance,

As dreams are remembered, though they are mere fancies.

If the lady of necklaces does not visit her dwellings,

Then may no dark-tressed, rumbling cloud visit them.

May God water an age whose turns of fortune made peace with us,

And a time whose life we wore while it lay drowsing,

And the attainment of wishes after stalling and evasion.

And they are trifles, even if you granted them in advance.

If a man does not repay you with equal affection,

And falls short of what you gave him, he withholds your due.

I saw discerning Abu al-Fadl, through his shrewdness,

Attain a glory the shrewdest had not attained.

At a time when no victor had won your praise,

Nor had any fire-seeker drawn a spark from the fire of your censure.

He saw an ambition above the stars and measured it

Against his own ambition: all things are judged by comparison.

He tarried ahead of al-Simak, and was not

A shelter for a star followed by al-Fawaris.

And truly, my brother is one who never tires of my disposition,

And will not see me standing while he sits,

And who, in my earnestness and in attacks on my folly,

Is distant yet near, smiling yet glowering.

A young man who treats friends fairly in every gathering:

Its place of honor is his, and so is its farthest seat.

Noble in character, he does not compete for wealth,

But he competes in noble deeds.

Your father is the man whose twisted cord people never undid,

Nor could any probing hand expose a weak spot in him.

Despite his enemies' plots, he settled, unarmed,

In a station that spears and horsemen shunned.

    لكلِّ امريءٍ في صَحبهِ من يُجانسُ

    The sons of Hajib al-Nu'man are my companions and my kin;

Every man has among his companions someone of his own kind.

They protected me from the claws of a lion,

A mighty lion whose prey are thick-necked lions.

    وقد تحبسُ الشيءَ القريبَ الحبائسُ

    And I was within his hand's reach, yet eluded him;

Even what is close at hand can be held back by barriers.

I single you out for the words you deserve,

Even if noses are rubbed in dust by what I say:

The noses of men who guard the space before him,

Yet never guarded the affection you guard.

They, when a sting-wound on your skin bleeds,

Are wolves, ravenous at the scent of blood.

They offer you an open, cheerful smile, yet every one of them

Harbors beneath his ribs a bane born of enmity's disease.
