    By my life, I warned the dweller in Qumis,

    and I cautioned—if caution could hinder fate.

    And I told them: had counsel a discerning eye,

    you would flee from what you see.

    Care was banished and your resolves overpowered

    by singing that repeats its refrain, and wine.

    And a rock-viper, as old as Sumayra,

    has its lair in the eyes of onlookers.

    It beguiles men's minds as though it were,

    when coiled, a bracelet for the hands.

    تَصَرَّمَ ليلٌ دونَه وَنَهَارُ

    One of the deaf vipers, its cunning baffled the blows of time;

    night and day have passed without reaching it.

    I see in you what you do not see, while you

    are brought nearer by staying put—but not to safety.

    He traveled by night, hiding his face's radiance from the darkness,

    and the pupil of the sun's eye is dazzled by him.

    عليه لفعلِ المكرُماتِ مَدَارُ

    He pursues the deepest grudges, never relenting;

    he is the pivot upon which noble deeds turn.

    And he has taught his steeds to raid, so their march,

    when they seek enemy land, is stealth itself.

    Unseen, their hoofbeats cannot be heard,

    nor is dust stirred in their tracks.

    They achieved their purpose against Jurjan's people, and there curled

    around their battle-dust a ring of Indian steel.

    They sought the Indian swords, till recognition joined

    faces and blade-edges at the pool of death.

    اذا همَّ لم يَبْعُدْ عليه مَزارُ

    And he accustomed them to long marches, girded for action;

    when he resolves, no destination is distant for him.

    Their eyes are too dim for what he sees,

    and their arms too short for what he reaches.

    تأملهُ في المشكلاتِ سِبَارُ

    And he draws strength from prudence, not his troops;

    his reflection is a probe into difficult matters.

    I almost dare reproach you for what you offered,

    though there is no disgrace in your giving.

    I rouse you to the great task, while you imagine

    the gleam of silver and gold is my ambition.

    And by God, but for glory I would not have come willingly

    to you, even had a spear-point been my bridle.

    وطفلاً لهُ حتّى الصَّباحِ جُؤارُ

    Rescue a nursing mother whose hope alone remains,

    and a child whose wailing lasts until morning;

    and a people in need of your governance,

    as stumbling afflicts the forefeet of limping beasts.

    And you do not fear your foes' treachery, for they are

    branches whose fruit is the bounty of your hands.

    And may you live as long as al-Jady shines as a guide,

    and as long as the two Farqad stars remain neighbors.
