We are content, but the keen-cutting swords are not.

We wrestle them away from your heads, and they wrestle back.

So beware of baring your heads:

know that locks of hair are their magnet.

The kings of the earth ask, “For whom are these words of yours?”

I said, “Are there targets other than kings?”

    Now Baghdad wept, when

the deserts seized us and knuckles closed around us.

    فتسرِقُهُ ريحُ الصَّبا وتُسالِبُ

    We protect the dust beneath our feet from the webbing of their toes;

yet the east wind steals it and strives to snatch it away.

And suppose, by riding, we kept it from the east wind:

can we keep from it what our mounts trample?

What did bright Mashrafi swords achieve there?

A dusky, pallid man slipped free of them.

A youth who, when he gives death his soul—

then one who fears death’s causes has perished. [Wording unclear.]

I say to Sa'd, with the riding camels his abode:

“Are you afraid of the causes of death?”

“And has God created joy?” He answered, “No.”

I said, “Rouse them; today you are my companion.”

And leave the trailing folds of your mantle, for

this garment of yours does not befit greatness.

    وأثوابُ طُلاّبِ المَعالي ثعالِبُ

    The turbans of seekers of high honors are sharp swords;

and the robes of seekers of high honors are foxes.

    تقول سُيوفي هُنّ لي والكَواثِبُ

    I have designs upon the necks of kings;

my swords say, “They are mine—and the shoulders too.”

So if I do not despoil them with their blades,

then the Ajarib of Tamim did not give me birth.

How long indeed I have put them off and shunned them,

and sought through verse what verse cannot claim!

Do I hope for any prize without their points?

Ah, my shame! I turn repentantly toward glory.

I pitied Banu al-Barsha when I kept their company,

for their ignorance—ignorance is an evil companion.

    وقلتُ قبولُ المكرُماتِ معائِبُ

    I taught them my character, but they did not learn;

and I said, “Accepting generous favors is disgraceful.”

    فما أنا في أخْذِ الرغائبِ راغِبُ

    So protect my hand from being crippled by your gifts;

I have no desire to accept rich gifts.

    فَمِنْ نِعَمِ الأيامِ عندي مَصائِبُ

    I was created to deem accepting rich gifts a disgrace;

so some blessings of the days are, to me, calamities.

Do not rebuff anyone asking a favor,

even if it is your ancestral honors and noble deeds.

For I nearly granted the envious their wishes,

for fear that someone pursuing his aims might be disappointed.

And face swords as I do, when they bend back,

their arms and striking edges in fetters.

For if foxes possessed my valor, they would rise

with skulls trading blows with sharpened blades.

Nor disregard Tamim’s favor toward you,

the morning Taghlib came against us with its battalions,

on every swift-reined steed, as though each

were another rider to its rider, so long was its neck.

Their rumps and chests demand of us

what the plundering lances plundered from them.

In their rancor they wish their manes

were arrows, to shoot at us and wage war.

They fled upon them, outstripping their own lances,

their necks and shoulders going before them.

With spear-points we made for their backs

    eyes whose eyebrows were sword-blows.

While you stood watching the necks

being severed, and the ravens of heads croaking.

And our regard for you supplies impregnable armor,

though a plunderer, had he wished, could strip away the Sabiri mail.

They refused, in pride, to obey the straight spears,

so keen-cutting swords poured upon them like silver,

and returned to us as gold from their blood.

Behold: let whoever seeks glory win it thus,

on the day of al-Uzala, when swords were thunderbolts

falling upon them, and bows were stone-hurlers.

They met its arrows with beardless cheeks, and turned back

with beards and mustaches of arrows upon their faces.

How is it that they snatch away their souls,

while mourning over them with their plaintive twang?
