The desert accompanies me wherever I go.

Since when has the desert sought what I seek?

I fed the wastes the life of every noble she-camel,

until I feared that I myself would be their fare.

My plunging onward cuts off the winds’ breath,

and my burning ardor quenches the fires of noon.

I seek something whose like is never sought,

though some men think poetry is my livelihood.

I saddle the spearheads and mount them:

for an ambition like mine, such is my mount.

Is every place in time made of lances,

that I must ride and turn upon their tips?

Men assailed me with threats; would that they

had not become dear, despite the hatred between us.

When they frightened me with their swords, I took a good omen

from passing my right hand over my head and shoulder.

Who will tell the scattered clans of Khindif

that in conduct I have followed a path unlike my own,

and that I gave people my pure affection,

yet they gave me nothing but words of welcome?

    ولو قلتُ عَمروٌ كلُّهم لم أُكَذَّبِ

    I tested Amr, one of them, and found him wanting;

had I said, ‘They are all Amr,’ I would not be called a liar.

They said, ‘We resent your being conceited.’

O glory! Is there anyone among them who is not conceited?

Every vanquished man believes that he

has more right to life’s sweetness than any mighty victor.

And every base man among them, plainly flawed,

thinks himself above the noble lord behind his curtain.

How long must the mounts complain of me, and how long, I wonder,

must I keep up my night journeys and my returns upon them?

Perhaps time’s reversals will pity, for the grit in their eyes,

the weary ones whose kohl is deepest darkness.

They donned the darkness in Fars and cast it off

at Shayzar, while the star had not yet vanished.

Did the darkness lengthen for them, or did the distance shorten?

We are weary of you, O night of the mountain pass: be gone!

Had al-Harith’s radiant face been unveiled,

you would have cleared away, till every darkness vanished.

We traveled by night only in the light of his brow,

and grazed only in a lush preserve he afforded.

The land between the Euphrates’ heart and Jasim was guarded

by the thrusts of a youth nimble with straight, rigid lances.

The flanks of swift steeds cradle him, after

they have played every game with him among the sword-edges.

    أوانِسُ إلاّ أن يقولَ له ثِبي

    Frowning, except when they behold his face;

tame, except when he gives the command, ‘Leap!’

Even before the Romans, they never entered a battle

    without prancing amid streaming blood.

That evening their blood took flight at the threat,

so the lances flew among them without being bloodied.

The kings of the factions scattered from Abu

Firas, trading closeness to him for avoidance.

Beside the lance is a lance that rends armor ahead of it,

and accomplishes what defeats every striking blade.

A youth who journeys with far-reaching resolve toward his hopes,

alone, though his smallest escort is a thousand cavalry squadrons.

He has watched time until no marvel passes

to draw a second, astonished glance from him.

His intuitions spared him the need to test affairs,

though time’s reversals have not sufficed for every seasoned man.

    فقد عَمِيَتْ والحربُ لم تتجَلْبَبِ

    You seared the eyes of the envious with their own gaze;

they are blind already, though war has not yet donned its cloak.

Let your spearhead outstrip your tongue against them:

whenever you beguile enemies with gentleness, you are beguiled.

    وإنْ لبِستْ ثوبَ الرِّضا لكَ فاغضَبِ

    If it sits still to make you soften toward it, rise;

and if it dons the robe of contentment with you, be angry.

For avoiding evil will bring it back

to a nature whose ways have never been disciplined.

Are you not the one who, when war’s defenders flee

and none remains but the battle-girded horseman,

reaches him before the sword does, then strikes him

and tells the blade, ‘Strike, if you wish’?

    فقل لبنيهِ ليس دهرُكم أبي

    Time does not dispute that you are its master;

so tell its sons, ‘Your Time is no father of mine.’

As though its dispensation had never once said to yours,

‘Reward me,’ nor its noble deeds said, ‘Give!’

By my life, whoever hoped in you has attained wealth,

and whoever cried to you, ‘Help, Taghlib!’ has made himself heard.

Did the revolving firmament say, on seeing

my praise of you in every polished verse,

‘I think the meanings of his poetry come from my stars’?

Yet I swear that I never speak of a star.

Release me, release me from a quest in which I had profited,

but which I sold for a refuge, out of longing for you.

For, having placated my critics for your sake, I am not

the first lover tormented by reproach.

I excused time’s reversals when you denied me,

while my hope lay in another, so I made no complaint.

    إذا أنتَ لم تَسْكَرْ من الخَمْرِ فاشْرَبِ

    I gave my heart to drink of love for you, yet it was not sated;

if wine has not made you drunk, then drink!

I swore to look to none but you as my hope,

and sincerely turned from glory with a sinner’s repentance.
