This is my joy in Abu al-Muʿammar,

handsome of form, wondrous to behold:

in him who wounds me with a dagger from his glance,

and pelts me with pearls from his speech.

And such is he that, if, out of my caution,

he dwelt between my pupil and my eye socket,

my heart would not trust my own glance with my safety.

A youth whose face I confronted amid my army

    وبِتُّ من وقعتِهِ لم أَنفرُ

    of my ambition, my resolve, and my pride;

and I spent the night without fleeing his assault.

Who will carry word to the companions of the crescent moon:

Journey on, and do not ask for news of me.

So absorbed in you and in my thoughts, I have almost

forgotten you through remembering so much.
