اشربْ على مطرِ المصيفِ
ووميضِand the flash of برقٍlightning كالسيوفِlike swords
ووميضِ برقٍ كالسيوفِ
Drink to the summer rain,
Drink to the rain of summer,
And lightning's flash, like swords,
To the flash of lightning like swords,
وحنينand the moaning of رعدٍthunder لاnot يزاceases (first part of يزال)
وحنين رعدٍ لا يزا
لُcompletion of يزال, 'ceases' يروقُdelights سمعكَyour hearing بالعَزيفِwith music
لُ يروقُ سمعكَ بالعَزيفِ
And the moan of thunder that never
To the yearning thunder that never ceases,
Ceases to delight your hearing with music,
To please your hearing with the melody.
وغَمامةٍand a cloud قَسَمَتْdivided زماtime (first part of زمانك)
وغَمامةٍ قَسَمَتْ زما
نكَcompletion of زمانك, 'your time' بينbetween طَلٍّdrizzle أَوor وكِيفِpouring rain
نكَ بين طَلٍّ أَو وكِيفِ
And a cloud that divided your
And to a cloud that divided your time,
Time between drizzle and pouring rain,
Between a long hope or a brief respite,
وحَدَائقٍand gardens أنوارُهاtheir blossoms
وحَدَائقٍ أنوارُها
تُعدِيgive the upper hand to العيونَthe eyes علىover الأُنوفِthe noses
تُعدِي العيونَ على الأُنوفِ
And gardens whose blossoms
And to gardens whose lights,
Give the eyes the upper hand over the noses.
Surpass eyes over the summits.
فاذاthen if عَدِمْتَهماyou lack them both معاًtogether
فاذا عَدِمْتَهما معاً
فاشربْthen drink علىto وجهِthe face of الشَّريفِthe noble
فاشربْ على وجهِ الشَّريفِ
Then, if you lack them both together,
So if you miss them both,
Drink to the face of the noble,
Then drink to the face of the noble,
الزينبيal-Zaynabi الأملَسِsmooth الاthe (fragment of الأكناف)
الزينبي الأملَسِ الا
أَكنافِflanks منfree of أَثرِtraces القُرُوفِblemishes
أَكنافِ من أَثرِ القُرُوفِ
Al-Zaynabi, with smooth
Of smooth beauty, except,
Flanks, free of the traces of blemishes.
For the traces of ruins on the cheeks.
نبضتْpulsed عروقُكَyour veins منfrom بنيthe sons of الthe (article of العباس)
نبضتْ عروقُكَ من بني ال
عبَّاسِAbbas فيin البيتِthe house المنيفِlofty
عبَّاسِ في البيتِ المنيفِ
Your veins took their pulse from the sons of
Your veins throbbed from the sons,
Abbas, in the lofty house.
Of Al-Abbas in the blessed house,
وتزينتْand was adorned بكَwith you زينبٌZaynab
وتزينتْ بكَ زينبٌ
زينُthe adornment of المسامعِthe ears بالشُّنُوفِwith earrings
زينُ المسامعِ بالشُّنُوفِ
And Zaynab was adorned with you,
And Zainab adorned herself with you,
As ears are adorned with earrings.
The adornment of hearing with earrings.
وبنوand the sons of عليٍّAli لستyou are not منof
وبنو عليٍّ لست من
همthem كالشَّظاةِlike the splint bone منof الوَظيفِthe shank bone
هم كالشَّظاةِ من الوَظيفِ
And Ali's sons—you are not of
And the family of Ali, you are not,
Them as a mere splint bone is of the shank.
Like the splinters from kindling.
ياO ابنson of الوصيينِthe two legatees اللذيwho (first part of dual اللذين)
يا ابن الوصيينِ اللذي
نِcompletion of dual اللذين, 'who' تنازعاthey both contested حقَthe right of الرَّديفِthe successor
نِ تنازعا حقَ الرَّديفِ
O son of the two legatees who
O son of the two successors,
Contended for the successor's right,
Who disputed the right of affiliation,
وتشاجرand quarreled الأَقوامُthe peoples فيover ابson (first part of ابن)
وتشاجر الأَقوامُ في اب
نِcompletion of ابن, 'son' العمِّthe paternal uncle والعمِّand the paternal uncle الرؤوفِcompassionate
نِ العمِّ والعمِّ الرؤوفِ
And the peoples quarreled over the
And the groups quarrelled over the son,
Cousin and the compassionate uncle.
Of the uncle and the merciful uncle.
أَنتyou المخيَّرُthe choicest منهماof the two of them
أَنت المخيَّرُ منهما
بينbetween التليدِthe inherited الىto الطَّريفِthe newly acquired
بين التليدِ الى الطَّريفِ
You are the choicest of them both,
You are the chosen one between them,
From the inherited to the newly won.
From the ancient to the fresh.
