    We leave Baghdad without regret:

what resident after us could bring her honor?

We departed, the livers of lofty virtues wounded

for us, and the eyelids of noble deeds shedding tears.

A cloud appeared to my companions at al-Ghumaym,

of dust, now drawing near, now falling behind.

I said to them: Either Hudhaym is coming at you,

or the mountains of al-Jasimiyyah are advancing.

Keep riding on the backs of your steeds,

for I know the sons of vile women better.

I hurled myself against the breasts of their spears,

and was almost snatched up by the spearhead tips.

Their swords pass me among themselves, bleeding,

and their spears plunder me, dripping blood.

Whenever we give one another death to drink among the spears,

I say to my spear: May a keen blade destroy your breast!

Do you demand of me the heart of every armored warrior,

though you once disdained an armored warrior's heart?

    فقلتُ صَهٍ ما عَرّقَتْ فيكَ خِنْدِفُ

    And Suwayd ibn Malik implored me concerning them;

I said: Hush! Khindif has struck no roots in you.

For I feared humiliation as you feared death,

and were you humiliation itself, you would fear my fear.

I charged again, while India's white blades bent against helmets,

and the brown shafts of tall spears splintered in coats of mail.

And our swords win us redress from every tribe,

but against our age they win us none.

Were it a person visible to the eye,

you would lend him the humiliation you now borrow.

I left Banu Hamdan, with Time their slave,

and came to the slaves of al-Azd without hesitation.

and turn it away from lightning that never breaks its promise.

And they said: Earth's seas can be drained of water,

but the sea of their bounty among mankind never runs dry.

Nor is a noble man one who goes to excess in giving,

without knowing the object of his extravagance,

hurrying toward what his honor does not require,

while behind him a rightful claim cries out and calls.
