Night's blackness is my steed, and its stars my companions.

Has a nobler company than mine ever ridden the darkness?

My pursuit of high honors, though they are my nature,

is strange—as is grief's plundering me, though it is my spoil.

Within the soul is a weight no strength can bear,

and a reproach that makes Time spend the night sobbing.

    تَواضُعُ قدري ما يَرونَ من العُجْبِ

    People have claimed that I am conceited;

what they see as conceit is modesty for one of my worth.

Were I not above obscenity, O Sharif,

my words would bellow against you like a male camel-calf.

I knew Time's vicissitudes until I no longer knew them,

and traded blows with them until the beating wore me away.

They have left my sword duller in its striking edges,

and more notched in its blade than my tongue is in abuse.

A band rebuked me for riding the mount of death,

and said: "Does one amid plenty desire drought?"

I surely know that helplessness offers rest,

and know that level ground is easier to tread than rugged ground.

If all people sought noble deeds,

wealth would be like poverty, and the slave like the master.

But the forms of high achievement are hidden

from every eye that does not see with understanding.

    فلا عشتُ في يومٍ يَمُرُّ بلا حَرْبِ

    Time's warfare has added to my experience;

may I never live a day that passes without war.

If anyone's heart grows accustomed to afflictions,

you, my heart, were created from affliction itself.

Are you content to drink the murk of watering places,

when once you took no delight even in cool, sweet water?

And do you stir my ribs against me without a fault,

though once you would not punish a wrongdoer for his wrong?

If you are my heart, then willingly hate love,

and spare me the distance and nearness of loved ones.

If you refuse that, then know this:

glory accepts nothing but my being without a heart.

Indeed, if I chose my love, I would bestow it

on Ali's perfection—or else forsake love.

Without him, you would not find wishes fulfilled in my pursuits,

nor find me on their easy and spacious ground.

And who is like Ali for horsemen raising their cry,

and bright swords, drawn by their hilts to spring?

He sees the sun as a mother and the stars as brothers,

and beholds a peer in heaven's full moon.

I had no need of hopes once I saw him,

and he, of all mankind, became all I needed.

I sought no bounty from any hand but his—

are rains sought anywhere but from the clouds?

The foremost of mankind begot you, and vying

for your seed were the loins of mighty, stout-necked rulers.

Neither has your glory betrayed Dayruzusht's,

nor has Persia disgraced you in bygone ages.

You inherited a book from Yalan, and from those two

inherited the sons of Sasan, clan upon clan.

Surely softer than the clouds' heart toward the soil,

and harder against Time's vicissitudes than rocky hills.

Before Ad and Jurhum in these lands, they

raised glory's spearshaft, joint upon joint.

Their seasoned steeds are led without reins,

and ridden on the day of battle without stirrups.

The revolving firmament deemed Babak's soil

more deserving and worthier than itself of the bright stars.

Your fragrance creeps and flows through its breeze,

and your scent clings to its waters and soil.

    بكم شرُفَتْ شَرقُ البلادِ على الغَرْبِ

    It gained no honor from the sun's rising there;

through you, the East won honor above the West.

    فلا نارُ إلاّ ما تُنيرُ وما تجني

    I saw you gather the fire of every tribe;

so there is no fire but what you kindle and gather.

You boast before them of the noble Persians,

yet without you the Persians would be lower than the Arabs.

How much wealth you have given, how many raids

you have plundered, and foes left nursing resentment overnight!

With a hand that, despite its ailments, pours like rain,

and wood that stays hard under calamities' gnawing.

And battles where, amid the dust, bend and wheel

bright, keen swords and well-formed, lean-bellied steeds.

A joust: keen-edged swords from their sheaths

are dragged toward it, with spearheads also in tow.

They saw you and died of fear in the hands holding them,

and even Death is likelier to die of terror.

So the swords trod upon no throats there,

nor did its winds sweep down upon any drinkers.

    ولو شِئْتَ خلّيْتَ الزّمانَ بلا خَطْبِ

    And many a calamity you remedied for Time's missteps;

had you wished, you would have left Time without a calamity.

Your companions in what you acquire are many,

yet you disdain to meet your enemy in company.

The sword's point wishes it could stand

in your hand, while pens envy it for writing.

I shall screen myself from many hopes of gain

with you, though no screens stand between us.

Had you wished, when my request was delayed with you,

I would have shaken you for it like a keen, cutting sword.

I left you without binding your fingers, for I

saw that beasts rich in milk need no binding.

Whenever I sought your bounty, I obtained it

from your hands without deceit or force.

Earnestness is simply seeing you girded for action,

as though dispensing noble gifts were play to you.

You wear two strings of pearls from my necklaces,

and through your bounty I roam a spacious land.
