Sons of Maqan, heal Amir's grudges,

And be a hand that has gathered its fingers to itself.

Support generosity with forbearance, and forbearance with generosity.

And do not scorn the leader who was once a follower.

For the flesh's fat bears its lean along,

And so it grows; yet some counsel goes to waste.

Do not begrudge acting justly and making a chief of

Gharib, the stranger, for he led the clan while still a youth.

Let him be a defender if evil shows itself,

And an intercessor among you when an excuse is rejected.

He cuts, and his cut does not miss the joints,

And twists the lancets at the openings of veins.

And who among you is like Kamal al-Dawla, the noble chief,

When right never lacks someone among men to obstruct it,

And every praise-poet has prepared, with your aims in view,

    Wares yielding nothing but losses?

And who among you is his equal when the horses drew back,

Having come, straying, as the thirsty come to water,

And dust's canopy was spread and spears laid as a carpet,

And death's eagle was bound to swoop down?

I saw Gharib, the stranger, majestic in stature,

Distant yet near, lofty yet humble.

Gharib, singular in cunning, concern, and hopes,

A stranger to sleep, finding no pleasure in beds.

Like the tip of a Khatti spear in an avenger's hand,

It bobs in quick succession whenever he shakes it.

And ever since the race stretched out its rein, he has kept

Cutting short the leading steeds' breath, himself at ease.

Otherwise, be like Bakr and Taghlib,

On the morning when, in their pride, they insisted on abasement.

Their swords are drawn by their own hands against themselves,

And among their own they brandish leveled spears.

And Jassas son of Murra kindled among them

A flame's radiance that never ceases shining through the ages.

And split apart a clan that, had Ma'add raided them,

They would have served them a cup of steeped poison.

Set glory's shaft upright, and safeguard an encampment,

And a broad tract that is yours in a corner of the earth.

And withhold your harm from the headstrong ally,

If he is content with peace from you.

But if nothing remains but the sharp sword and its drawing,

Then die nobly, and find sweetness in the places where you fall,

With brown spears that make blood shimmer as they weep,

And flashing white swords that laugh with the lightning,

And shaggy-necked steeds of A'waj's lineage,

Long-necked, they have already experienced battles.
