بكركرَat Karkar منamong جِبالِthe mountains of الرومِthe Romans شُمٌّlofty peaks
تَراهاyou see them للنّجومِwith the stars مُصافِحاتِclasping hands
At Karkar stand lofty peaks among the Romans' mountains;
you see them clasping hands with the stars.
وهَبناand grant that we لاdo not نخافُfear الرّومَthe Romans فيهاthere
فكيفَthen how بسدِّهاwith their barring كُلَّevery الجِهاتِdirection
And grant that we do not fear the Romans there—
then what of their barring every direction?
شَواهقُtowering peaks تلتَويtwist بعضاًsome ببعضِaround others
فقدfor indeed عَقَدَتْthey have knotted لَناfor us عَرضَthe breadth of الفُراتِthe Euphrates
Towering peaks twist around one another;
for they have knotted the breadth of the Euphrates before us.
إذاwhen خَلَصَتْmakes its way through إليناto us الريحُthe wind منهاfrom them
تدلّتْit lowers itself فيon رشاءٍa rope منfrom بَناتِthe Daughters (stars)
When the wind makes its way to us from them,
it lowers itself on a rope from the Daughters.
فَياso, O سيفَSword of الإلهِGod سقيتَyou gave to drink كأساًa cup
يُسَمُّis poisoned بفضلِهاby its dregs سُمَّthe poison of الجِهاتِthe regions
So, O Sword of God, you have given a cup to drink,
by whose dregs the poison of all regions is poisoned.
ومعضلةٍand a predicament لوif استصحبتَyou took along فيهاin it
فؤادَكyour heart لمnot يكنْbe لكَto you بالمَواتِcompliant
And a predicament in which, had you taken along
your heart, it would not have complied with you.
ولكنْbut ياO عليُّAli رِضاكَyour approval شيءٌsomething
أعَزُّharder عليَّfor me فقداًto lose منthan حَياتيmy life
But, O Ali, your approval is something
harder for me to lose than my own life.
فَلاso do not تستبطِdeem overdue مدحَكَpraise of you منfrom بليغٍan eloquent man
تَحيَّرwas bewildered منby فِعالِكَyour deeds والصّفاتِand the qualities
So do not think an eloquent man's praise of you overdue,
when he is bewildered by your deeds and qualities.
لمدحكَfor praising you ماwhat أُهذبُI refine منof لِسانيmy tongue
ونصركَand aiding you ماwhat أُثقّفُI straighten منof قَناتيmy lance
What I refine of my tongue is for your praise,
and what I straighten of my lance is to aid you.
