وقدand already كلَّمتْwounded قلبيmy heart سيوفُthe swords لِحَاظِهِof his glances
وقد كلَّمتْ قلبي سيوفُ لِحَاظِهِ
شكوتُI complained إليهاto her قِصَّتيmy tale وهيwhile she تبسِمُshe smiles
شكوتُ إليها قِصَّتي وهي تبسِمُ
And the swords of his glances had wounded my heart;
The swords spoke to my heart through their sheaths
I complained to her of my plight while she smiled.
I told my story to her as she smiled
فلمso did not أَرَI see بدراًa full moon ضاحكاًlaughing قبلَbefore وجههاher face
فلم أَرَ بدراً ضاحكاً قبلَ وجهها
ولمand did not تَرَshe sees قبليbefore me ميتاًa dead man يتكلمُhe speaks
ولم تَرَ قبلي ميتاً يتكلمُ
So I had never seen a laughing full moon before her face,
I’d never seen the full moon laugh like her face
Nor had she seen a dead man speaking before me.
And she’d never seen a dead man speak before me
