ويومٍand a day تَرامىexchanged shots بالسِّهامِwith arrows لحاظُهُits glances
ويومٍ تَرامى بالسِّهامِ لحاظُهُ
فماso whatever شئتَyou wished منof مقتولةٍa slain woman وقتيلِand a slain man
فما شئتَ من مقتولةٍ وقتيلِ
And a day whose glances volleyed arrows:
One day his tent was pierced with arrows,
as many slain women and men as you could wish!
So take whatever wounded or killed you like.
مسكناwe held بهon it منّاof ours القلوبَthe hearts صَبابةًin yearning
مسكنا به منّا القلوبَ صَبابةً
علىover حرِّthe heat of وجدٍpassion فيin الصدودِestrangement دخيلِlodged within
على حرِّ وجدٍ في الصدودِ دخيلِ
That day we held our own hearts in yearning,
They settled in our hearts fluttering,
over the heat of a passion lodged in estrangement.
Intruders in burning passion and fervent love.
غدرنَthey betrayed بناus يومَthe day of التّفرّقِparting فاغْتدىso it came to be
غدرنَ بنا يومَ التّفرّقِ فاغْتدى
يطالبُdemands كلٌّeach قلبَهhis heart بكفيلِfor a guarantor
يطالبُ كلٌّ قلبَه بكفيلِ
They betrayed us on the day of parting, so it came to be
On the day we parted they betrayed us,
that each demanded a guarantor from his heart.
Each seeking his own heart as guarantor.
ولستُand I am not وفيwhile in الأيامِthe days للحبِfor love سلوةٌsolace
ولستُ وفي الأيامِ للحبِ سلوةٌ
إذاif ملَّgrew weary يوماًone day صاحبيmy companion بملُولِone who tires easily
إذا ملَّ يوماً صاحبي بملُولِ
And though the days bring relief from love, I am not—
I have no peace or pleasure in love
if my companion tires one day—one to tire in turn.
If my companion is bored one day.
أُكاتِمُI conceal from قَلبيmy heart رأيَthe sight of عينيmy eye وإنّهُand indeed it
أُكاتِمُ قَلبي رأيَ عيني وإنّهُ
ليكتُمُsurely conceals منّيfrom me سرَّthe secret of كلِّevery خليلِclose friend
ليكتُمُ منّي سرَّ كلِّ خليلِ
I keep what my eye sees secret from my heart, and it
I conceal my heart's view from my eye, though it
surely keeps every close friend's secret from me.
Hides from me the secret of every intimate friend.
