    O, for Hudayy! A cry—oh, for him!

He concerns himself with my money and its uses.

He reproaches me for a wineskin I pay dearly for,

And a kneeling camel whose limbs I make cheap.

He spoke, though he knew nothing of what tomorrow holds—

So should one accept the advice he gave?

A man has of his wealth only

What serves rightful claims and what he enjoys.

    رأْيُ حُضيّ منكَ أَعدالَهْ

    So leave Hudayy and his missions;

Hudayy's judgment, from you, his equals [syntax unclear].

After a champion of the sons of Mundhir,

Can I hope to keep company with his like?

May my bounty cease to flow for the day I bade him farewell

Beside al-Abraq, with its wild lote-tree.

As though he were the forepart of a Rudaynian spear,

    Slender, quivering in the hand.

    لو أَنه طاوله طالَهْ

    You lower it for the thrust, rushing headlong;

Were he to vie with it in height, he would overtop it.

What a youth you have hidden in the dust!

His stature draws his tunic upward.

You see him among the people when you come to him,

Like the full moon within the ring of its halo.
