May God diminish your good, O age,

in which inarticulacy is counted as eloquence.

Your cares know nothing but my heart,

and my spearpoint does not know your heart.

How fortunate the mute, misguided ones are that I

am in a land where my tongue is not feared.

So I hope there for none but a miser,

    whose palm gestures without fingers.

When no excuse remains for him to claim,

and excuses about his promise have consumed my lifetime,

he meets me with a face of iron,

as though I do not see him and he does not see me.

As though one seeking refuge with him were a fugitive,

    fleeing to sword-blows from spear-thrusts.

    فلولا اللهُ وابنُ المرزبانِ

    I have despaired of Iraq and its inhabitants;

and were it not for God and Ibn al-Marzuban,

I would have roused dust at every stopping-place,

racing me as though we were in a wagered race.

Nor would my place within it have been an abode

that one place could claim rather than another.

Your radiance, O Ali, guided my riding camels,

and your generosity, O Ali, turned my rein.

And when I roused you to lofty deeds,

I brandished the striking edges of the Yemeni sword.

May all the marvels of words be your ransom,

    and virgin rhymes and meanings,

even though they grow bewildered when we seek

to praise you for your fine qualities.

You hold, among noble virtues and high honors,

the place youth holds among beautiful women.

So may your nights yet to come never cease

to bring us days of congratulation.

    تَباعدَ نفْعُها والضُرُّ دانِ

    At your door a need has halted and lost its way;

its benefit has grown distant, while harm is near.

I made you my shield before I armored myself in

death's depths in the war fought anew.

    وجاهُكَ ذابلي وبهِ طِعاني

    Your bounty is my sharp sword, and with it I strike;

and your prestige is my slender spear, and with it I thrust.

So do not mingle your affection with unjust reproach,

nor let your estrangement gloat over closeness.

For no friend is congenial to me

who spurns me once he has achieved his aims.

I seek protection for your generosity from bold delay

toward one who hopes for it, and from cowardly action.

For what you give endures through the days,

while what we give perishes through the days.
