تقولُyou say إنّthat كلاميmy words غيرُnot مُنْتَحَلِplagiarized
ولاand not تُموِّلُنيyou enrich me شيئاًanything سوىexcept الأمَلِhope
You say that my words are not plagiarized,
You say my words are not plagiarized
Yet you give me no wealth but hope.
And nothing finances me except hope
وتحسَبُand you think البينَseparation للأعْداءِto enemies يسْمَحُyields freely بيwith me
وليسَand does not يسمَحُyield freely للخُلاّنِto close friends والخُلَلِand friendships
And you think separation freely yields me to enemies,
And you think time allows enemies to reconcile with me
But will not yield me to close friends and bonds of friendship.
Yet it does not allow for frauds and defects
يقولit says ليto me كلّماwhenever روّحْتُI gave rest to صهوتَهُits saddle-back
أمَاhave you not سئمتَyou have tired of ظهورَthe backs of الخيلِhorses والإبلِand camels
It tells me whenever I give its back some rest:
Whenever I wander, he says to me
Have you not tired of the backs of horses and camels?
Are you not tired of seeing horses and camels?
I shall surely dwell in الثّرىthe dust للحدِّto the grave (contextual reading) معتنقاًembracing
وماءُand the water وجهيof my face بهِin it أصْفىpurer منthan المُقَلِeyes
I shall surely dwell in the dust, embracing the grave,
I will settle the land embracing the boundary
And there the water of my face is purer than eyes.
And my face water on it is purer than spring water
بذلتُهُI offered it لنُيوبِto the fangs of البيدِthe deserts تأكُلُهُthey devour it
كيْماso that أعيشَI might live بعرضٍwith honor غيرِnot مُبْتَذَلِdebased
I offered it to the deserts' fangs to devour,
I exposed it to assaults of calamity to eat it
So that I might live with honor undebased.
So I live with honor not degraded
ماليwhy am I أُضامُI am wronged وليthough I have بالغرْبِin the west حاسرةٌunarmored warriors
قلوبُهاtheir hearts آفَةُthe bane of الخَطّيةِKhatt-made spears الذُّبَلِslender
Why am I wronged, when in the west I have unarmored warriors
I have no blame, though estranged in the land of foreigners
Whose hearts are the bane of slender spears from al-Khatt?
Whose hearts are afflicted by the disease of decay
تصونُhold back عنكfrom you بنوthe sons of طغجTughj مناصِلهاtheir sword blades
وتنتضيهاand they unsheathe them لرأسِfor the head of الفارِسِthe horseman البَطَلِthe valiant one
Banu Tughj hold their blades back from you,
The tribes of Taghlib protect their alliances from you
And draw them for the head of the valiant horseman.
And dedicate them to the head of the brave knight
وبالبصيرةِand in al-Busayra إيمانٌfaith (likely 'right hands' here) بهاin them قُضُبُkeen swords
هامُthe heads of الملوكِkings بهاof them أوْلىmore deserving منthan الخُلَلِscabbards
And in al-Busayra are right hands bearing keen swords;
And in Basra there is faith in it clubs
Kings' heads deserve them more than scabbards.
Worthy of rulers more than defects
لاlet not يَخْتِلَنَّكَever deceive you فيin تهوينهاbelittling them أحَدٌanyone
فماfor ... is not عَدُوُّthe enemy of بنىthe sons of سعْدٍSa'd بمُخْتَبَلِat all mad
Let no one deceive you by belittling them,
No one will make you think little of it
For Banu Sa'd's enemy is no madman.
For the enemy of Banu Sa’d is not with impurities
