And with a wrapped chest
And a wiry man wearing a vest—

He held a supple, easily bent bow,
Enframing it so it becomes framed
bending it, and it bent,
Until when the struggle was difficult

He slept on the bowstring

So it took him suddenly without caution
Then he was attacked before he could beware

Coinciding with fate
توافياًthe two met علىby قَدَرْdestiny
فابتدرْthen he rushed at الشاةَthe wild bovine الخُضُرْthe dark-hued one
The two met as fate decreed;
So it started with the sheep first
then he rushed at the dark-hued bull.
The action preceded the news
تَقَدَّمَpreceded الفِعُلthe deed الخَبَرْthe report
حتىuntil اذاwhen ماjust قيلَit was said فَرْhe fled
The deed preceded the report,
Until when it was said, flee
until, just as they said, 'He has fled,'
It straightened its neck and turned away

فاليومَso now يلتفُintertwine العُذُرْthe cheek-locks
he leveled his two horns and charged back.
So today the excuse turns
Now their cheek-locks intertwine;
To whoever had resolve and won

اقدَامُهُhis boldness بعدَafter الخَوَرْweakness

And many a breath in harm
And many a benefit [reading uncertain] lies in harm.

they would have made peace despite their grudges,

والدهرُand Time قَطَّاعُsevers المِرَرْtwisted cords

as the lion makes peace with the leopard.
And time splits bitterness
Time severs the twisted cords,
It turns the conditions of people

مثلَlike تَغاييرthe changing phases of القَمَرْthe moon

So the incapable and the capable
one man helpless, another capable.
