ياO عيشَناour life والعيشُand life أنتِyou وإنّماand only
أدعوكِI call you ماas long as ولعَclung الهَوىpassion بضلوعيto my ribs
O our life—and you are life itself—and I only
call you so as long as passion clings to my ribs.
هلdo ...? تذكرينَyou remember العهدَthe pledge ليلةَa night ليلةٍa night
حمِدpraised العَفافُchastity صَنيعكمyour conduct وصنيعيand my conduct
Do you remember the pledge, that night—a night
when chastity praised your conduct and mine?
صفتِlined up النجومُthe stars إلىtoward المَغيبِsetting ولمand did not تنلْattain
غيرَother than الحديثِconversation وقُبلةَand a kiss التوديعِof farewell
The stars lined up toward their setting, and nothing was gained
but conversation and a farewell kiss.
وحِذاركمand your fear نظرَthe gaze الوُشاةof the talebearers بوقفةٍduring a pause
كادَalmost الفراقُparting بهاin it يكونُbe شفيعيmy intercessor
And your fear of the talebearers’ gaze during a pause
in which parting almost became my intercessor?
أماas for الطلولُthe ruins فمِنthen, of هَوايَmy passion خليَّةٌfree
لكنّهاbut they فيin ذِلّتيmy abasement وخشوعيand my submission
As for the ruins, they are free of my passion,
yet they share my abasement and submission.
فأناfor I الذيthe one who قرّبتُI brought close غيرَnot مقَرَّبٍwelcomed
وأناand I الذيthe one who ناديتُI called غيرَnot سميعِhearing
For I am the one who offered closeness, yet was not welcomed,
and I am the one who called to what could not hear.
ماwhat غالَdestroyed ذاكَthat الوصلَunion وهوwhile it was مساعدٌfavorable
لمساعدٍto a willing partner والدهرand time جِدُّvery مطيعُobedient
What destroyed that union, though it was favorable
to a willing partner, and time was utterly obedient?
لوif تنصفُacted justly الأيامُthe days فيin أحكامهاtheir judgments
ماnot مانعتكَdenied you الشيءَthe thing غيرَnot مَنيعِinaccessible
Had the days been fair in their judgments,
they would not have denied you something within reach.
