She softened toward us when the travelers resolved to depart,

And came through the darkness, hastening cautiously.

Love tamed her hard heart, so it gave freely to us,

Though it had been stingier than Tammuz is with rain.

On the morning of parting she saw Moses' fire, which had already

Blazed up, leaving nothing of my heart and sparing nothing.

Slender and graceful—if only you could see her when she unveiled her face,

While the full moon gazed distractedly toward her, like one apologizing.

I saw two full moons—one a face, one the moon—

In the shade of two wings, one of night and one of hair.

I sipped the milk of her face from her lips,

When the predawn breeze drew my attention to her.

The stars of darkness gazed toward me; never had they seen

Anyone before me sipping wine from the moon's mouth.

Reproach was sweet, and she revealed her secrets to me,

On the night of union—rather, at the flood's bright beginning.
