رامَ بوخدِ الذبلِ العَطاشِ
O son of Yazid, lord of the allied clans,
O son of Yazid, chief of the tents
He sought, with the swift strides of lean, thirsty camels,
It became difficult at night's waning crescent

حيرةَ ليلٍ أغضفِ الحَواشي

واشجُجْ بها البيدَ ولا تُحاشِ
The bewilderment of a night with shadowy fringes.
Confused in a night of thick darkness
Cleave the desert wastes with them, and do not swerve aside.
Moan in it and do not be shy

Their marrow in the bone-ends was depleted by
The pure water became polluted at the watering place
The repeated passage of cud through their paunches,
The jars circulate among the palms

And the nimble singer's long estrangement
After the era of loud warbling
From sleep, save stolen snatches of light dozing.
None sleeps but the sly sleeper

Until, when the walker's sandal began to sting,
Until when the walker doubts his shoes
And the dog of midsummer readied itself for a fight,
And the dog pants in the heat

And the small-headed, speckled serpent's robe split open
And the coolness of dawn spreads
Along a path of serpents' robes,
On a path of soft sands

As the stallion is led with the whip
A small-eared man of brisk resolve brought them across,
It was authorized by the frowning Asma’

مُهْمَلَةً تأنسُ بالأنْجَاشِ
Who knows no sleep upon a bed.
Who does not know sleep on the bed
Unrestrained, they take comfort in driving cries,
Neglected, conversing with the rocks

When they strive to a tale-teller's song.
When they argue loudly
And the shade they walk beside was swept away,
And the shade she walks in is swept

And shortness of breath in the panting beast nearly
And the soul nearly wished for the grave
Brought its heart against the skull's thin bones.
To unite the heart and the bed

Their brother went on with untroubled heart;
Her brother went away content
So they, after the marrow-sapping march to water,
For they are the absent dear ones

Lighter dreams than the bed
That is the young man—not like Abu al-Nashnash,
That lad, not like Abu Nashnash
