Every land is stripped of its young champion,

yet al-Maʿarra is not bereft of a noble man.

On our way there, we cloaked ourselves in every sword-sheath

closing over the glances of a wary man.

It has half of its sword to shield it,

and half it unsheathes like a flame,

revealing what lies behind our face-veils.

So we traveled, with darkness the watchman's eye.

The spears of Banū ʿAdī bid us farewell,

as a loving brother and a beloved bid farewell.

On our shoulders and on our necks

their spearheads crouch, ready to spring.

And our turning toward them startles them,

so they fall or slip off the shaft-joints.

And they lodge in our cheeks when we are heedless,

so one takes them for the first flecks of gray hair.

We greet his form, and he says, “Welcome!”

Our cheerfulness is exchanged for pallor.

Your whiteness in hair is wisdom and forbearance,

and folly in keen-edged swords of Indian steel.

We have learned from the nights what you did not know,

so it imparts no knowledge of calamities.

And a youth of Kilāb greeted us,

his manners arrows in the hearts.

I returned his greeting and saw in him

signs no discerning man could mistake.

So I said, “Will you not grant protection against enemies?”

He said, “Yes—and against the long stretches of the plains.

I shall show you the sun in Homs as a maiden,

though at Qawʿa she has become a spinster, nearing sunset.”

A night-long cloud, with no bounty in it

for your footmen except your marching and exhaustion.

So, O Ghallāq, not one who shuts out goodness—

rather, you are a dispeller of sorrows.
