    The sons of Hamdan say, “You are destitute.”

    And what harm does it do him if he has no wealth?

    He has a swimming-gaited steed whose easy pace the wind cannot overtake,

    And a brown, quivering spear of al-Khatt's cane,

    And a gleaming sword of iron's pure essence, and a helmet,

    And a coat of David's double-woven mail—

    له في سَوادِ الليلِ حِلٌّ وتَرحالُ

    The gear of a man whose heart terror cannot fill;

    He camps and journeys in the blackness of night.
