There came to us, in the year Banū Kilāb set out,
A year came to us, the sons of dogs marched
Men of Ḥarām, for whom nothing is forbidden.
Brigands who have no shame
كَأَنَّas though بُيوتَهُمtheir dwellings شَجَرٌtrees صِغارٌsmall
بِقيعانٍon open plains تَقيلُrest at midday بِهاin them النَعامُthe ostriches
Their dwellings are as though they were small trees
As if their houses were saplings
On open plains where ostriches rest at midday.
In meadows grazed heavily by ostriches
حَرامِيّونَmen of Ḥarām لاnot يَقرونَthey offer hospitality to ضَيفاًa guest
وَلاand not يَدرونَthey know ماwhat خُلُقُthe character of الكِرامِthe noble
Men of Ḥarām who offer no hospitality to a guest,
Brigands who do not host a guest
Nor do they know the character of the noble.
And know not the nature of generosity
