أَجارَتَناO our neighbor إِنَّindeed الخُطوبَcalamities تَنوبُbefall
عَلَيناupon us وَبَعضَand some of الآمِنينَthose who feel secure تُصيبُstrike
O our neighbor, calamities indeed befall
Our neighbor, troubles befall us
us, and strike some who feel secure.
And some of the secure are struck
أَجارَتَناO our neighbor لَستُI am not الغَداةَthis morning بِبارِحٍdeparting
وَلَكِنand yet مُقيمٌremaining ماas long as أَقامَremains عَسيبُʿAsib
O our neighbor, I am not departing this morning,
Our neighbor, I am not yesterday's evening
but shall remain as long as ʿAsib remains.
But one who stays as long as the wind blows
فَإِنso if تَسأَلينيyou ask me هَلwhether صَبَرتُI endured فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I am
صَبورٌpatient عَلىunder ريبِvicissitudes of الزَمانِtime صَليبُsteadfast
So if you ask me whether I have endured, I am indeed
If you ask me, have I been patient? Then I
patient under time's vicissitudes, steadfast.
Am patient with the adversity of time, a cross

ظِباءٌgazelles وَطَيرٌand birds بِالفِراقِof parting نَعوبُcawing
There passed, foretelling the severing of the cord with Umm Jahdar,
There flowed from the bowels of obstinate denial
gazelles and birds cawing of parting.
Gazelles and birds with separation cry
نَظَرتُI looked فَلَمbut did not أَعتَفread the omens وَعافَتand she read the omens فَبَيَّنَتso they made clear
لَهاto her الطَيرُthe birds قَبليbefore me وَاللَبيبُand the wise one لَبيبُwise
I looked but read no omen; she did, and it was made clear
I looked but did not notice, and it departed so it made clear
to her by the birds before me—and the wise are wise.
To it the birds before me and the mindful is mindful
فَقالَتso she said حَرامٌforbidden أَنthat نُرىwe be seen بَعدَafter هَذِهِthis
جَميعَينِboth together إِلّاexcept أَنthat يُلَمَّcomes visiting غَريبُa stranger
So she said, 'It is forbidden that we be seen after this
So it said forbidden for us to see after this
together, unless a stranger comes to visit.'
Both together unless an exile returns
أَجارَتناO our neighbor صَبراًpatience! فَياfor, oh رُبَّmany a هالِكٍone who has perished
تَقَطَّعُare torn apart مِنfrom وَجدٍgrief عَلَيهِfor him قُلوبُhearts
O our neighbor, patience! For many a dead man
Our neighbor, patience, so oh Lord of destruction
is mourned by hearts torn apart with grief.
Hearts break from anguish over it
