إِنif تَكُyou are خالَناour maternal uncle فَقُبِّحتَthen may you be disgraced خالاًas a maternal uncle
فَأَنتَfor you الخالُthe maternal uncle تَنقُصُyou detract لاتَزيدُyou do not add
If you are our maternal uncle, may you be disgraced as an uncle!
If you are far from us, you are blamed for the distance,
For you are the uncle who detracts rather than adds.
Yet you are the one far away, you cannot get any closer.
فَيَوماًso one day فيamong مُزَينَةَMuzayna أَنتَyou حُرٌّa free man
وَيَوماًand another day أَنتَyou محتِداكَyour two lines of descent العَبيدُslaves
So one day, among Muzayna, you are a free man,
One day you walk free in all your finery,
And another day, you are of slave ancestry on both sides.
Another day slaves deride and mock you.
أَحَقُmost deserving الناسِof people أَنto يَلقىhe encounters هَواناًhumiliation
وَيُؤكَلَand be devoured مالُهُhis wealth العَبدُthe slave الطَريدُthe outcast
Of all people, the one who most deserves to suffer humiliation
Is it right that people should suffer such disgrace -
And have his wealth devoured is the outcast slave.
That the outcast slave should seize and eat their wealth?
