And indeed I called early on the young man in his quarters,

before dawn, with a brimming, gurgling cup.

The jars had poured it their remaining wine,

red as warm blood from the jugular veins.

It had been kept three years in a round enclosure,

spacious, among young pigeons and hens.

It makes the wayward man seem to himself

a king binding a crown about his head.

And he keeps taking everything around him

for Iraq's choice she-camels, alighting with their litters.

And as though their saddle-frames and their ropes

were hung upon a little, mature, loudly braying ass,

driving eight she-asses, intent on impregnating them,

until they were on the verge of miscarrying.

She cast a premature foal onto the wasteland, wrapped

in the afterbirth's membrane and clots of mingled fluids.

A dark falcon fed nestlings with flesh,

on a towering height among Miḥrāj's summits.
