أَلاAh! حَبَّذاhow lovely أُمُّmother of الوَليدِal-Walid وَمَربَعٌand a dwelling-place
لَناfor us وَلَهاand for her نَشتوwe spend winter بِهِin it وَنَصيفُand we spend summer
Ah, how lovely are Umm al-Walid and a dwelling-place
for us and her, where we winter and summer!
حَراميَّةٌa woman of Haram أَمّاas for مَلاثُthe place encircled by إِزارِهاher waist-wrap
فَوَعثٌso, soft sand وَأَمّاand as for خَصرُهاher waist فَلَطيفُso, slender
A woman of Haram—as for the place her waist-wrap enfolds,
it is soft sand; as for her waist, it is slender.
كَأَنَّas though القُرونَthe braids السّودَblack فَوقَabove مَقَذِّهاher nape
إِذاwhen زالَwent away عَنهاfrom her بُرقُعٌa face-veil وَنَصيفُand a head-veil
It is as though the black braids above her nape,
when her face-veil and head-veil are gone,
بِهاupon her زَرَجوناتٌgrapevines بِقَفرٍin a wilderness تَنَسَّمَتbreathed gently
لَهاfor them الرِيحُthe wind حَتّىuntil بَينَهُنَّamong them رَفيفُa rustling
were grapevines upon her in a wilderness, gently stirred
by the wind, till a rustling rises among them.
