أَلَمdid … not? تَرَyou see أَنَّthat الصارِديَّةَal-Ṣāridiyya جَاوَرَتshe dwelt nearby
لَياليَnights بالمَمدورِat al-Mamdūr غَيرَnot كَثيرِmany
Have you not seen that al-Ṣāridiyya dwelt nearby
for a few nights at al-Mamdūr—
ثَلاثاًthree nights فَلَمّاand when أَنthat (emphatic) أَصابَتshe struck فُؤادَهُhis heart
بِسَهمَينِwith two arrows مِنof كُحلٍkohl دَعَتshe called بِهَجيرِin the noon heat
three—then, when she had struck his heart
with two arrows of kohl, she called in the noon heat
بِأَحَمَرَfor a red camel ذَيّالِlong and trailing العَسيبِthe tailbone مُفَرَّجٍwide-legged
كَأَنَّas though عَلىupon ذِفراهُhis poll نَضخَsplashes of عَبيرِperfume
for a red camel, long-tailed and wide-legged,
as though splashes of perfume lay upon his poll?
حَلَفتُI swore بِرَبِّby the Lord of الراقِصَاتِthe dancing she-camels إِلىtoward مِنىًMinā
زَفِيفَthe fluttering flight of القَطَاsandgrouse يَقطَعنَthey cross بَطنَthe valley floor of هَبيرِHabīr
I swore by the Lord of the she-camels dancing toward Minā,
swift as fluttering sandgrouse, crossing the valley floor of Habīr:
لَقَدindeed كانَwas حُبُّlove for الصارِدِيَّةِal-Ṣāridiyya بَعدَماafter
عَلاrose فيamid سَوادِthe blackness of الرَأسِthe head نَبذُscattered flecks of قَتيرِgray hair
indeed, loving al-Ṣāridiyya, after
flecks of gray had risen amid my black hair,
يَكونُis سَفاهاًfolly أَوor يَكونُis ضَمانَةٍchronic sickness
عَلىafter ماwhat مَضىhas passed مِنof نِعمَةٍblessing وَعُصورِand years
was folly, or else a lingering sickness,
after the blessings and years gone by.
عَدِمتُmay I be rid of الهَوىlove لاnot يَبرَحُit ceases الدَهرَthroughout time مُقصِداًstriking fatally
لِقَلبيto my heart بِسَهمٍwith an arrow فيin الفُؤادِthe heart طَرِيرِsharp
May I be rid of love! It forever deals mortal blows
to my heart with an arrow keen within it.
وَقَدand indeed كانَhad قَلبيmy heart ماتَdied لِلحُبِّfor love مَوتَةًa death
فَقَدyet indeed هَمَّwas intent قَلبيmy heart بَعدَهاafter it بِنُشورِon resurrection
And my heart had once died for love;
yet afterward my heart was intent on resurrection.
جَلَتshe departed إِذwhen جَلَتshe departed عَنfrom أَهلِthe people of نَجدٍNajd حَميدَةًpraised
جَلاءَthe departure of غَنِيٍّa wealthy person لاnot جَلاءَthe departure of فَقيرِa poor person
She departed—when she left the people of Najd—esteemed,
as the wealthy depart, not as the poor.
وَقَالَتand she said وَماand not زادَتshe added عَلىbeyond أَنthat تَبَسَّمَتshe smiled
عَذيرَكَyour defender مِنagainst ذيone with شَيبَةٍgray hair وَعَذيريand my defender
And she said—though she did no more than smile—
“Who will defend you—and me—against a gray-haired man?”
