أَتُظهِرُdo you reveal ماwhat فيin الصَدرِthe breast أَمor أَنتَyou كاتِمُهconcealing it
وَكِتمانُهُand concealing it داءٌa disease لِمَنfor whoever هُوَhe كاتِمُهconceals it
Do you reveal what is in the breast, or are you concealing it?
Do you reveal what is in your heart or do you conceal it?
And concealing it is a disease for whoever conceals it.
Concealing it is an illness for the one concealing it.
وَإِضمارُهُand hiding it فيin الصَّدرِthe breast داءٌa disease وَعِلَّةٌand an affliction
وَإِظهارُهُand revealing it شُنعٌa disgrace لِمَنto whoever هُوَhe عالِمُهknows it
And hiding it in the breast is disease and affliction.
Harboring it in the heart is an illness and affliction.
And revealing it is a disgrace to whoever knows it.
Revealing it is shameful for the one who knows it.
وَفىgave in full لَكُماto you both يإِبنَيَO two sons of سُلَيمانَSulayman قاسِمٌan apportioner
بِجَدِّwith the good fortune of النُهىwisdom إِذwhen يَقسِمُdistributes الخَيرَgoodness قاسِمُهits apportioner
An apportioner has fully endowed you both, O sons of Sulayman,
It is enough for you two, O sons of Suleiman, Qasim,
with wisdom's good fortune, when goodness is allotted by its apportioner.
With the goodness of prohibition when the good is divided by its distributor.
فَبَيتُكُماso your house, you two بَيتٌa house رَفيعٌlofty بِناؤهُits construction
مَتىwhenever يَلقَit encounters شَيئاًsomething مُحدَثاًnewly made فَهُوَthen it هادِمُهdemolishes it
So your house is a house of lofty construction;
So your house is a lofty house in its construction
whenever it encounters something newly built, it tears it down.
Whenever it encounters something new, it demolishes it.
لَكُمfor you كَبشُa ram of صِدقٍtrue worth شَذَّبَdrove away الشَّولَthe dry she-camels عَنكُمُaway from you
وَكَسَّرَand shattered قَرنَيboth horns of كُلِّevery كَبشٍram يُصادِمُهbutts against him
You have a worthy ram who drove the dry she-camels away from you,
You have a ram of sincerity that drove the scoundrel away from you
and shattered both horns of every ram that butts against him.
And broke the horns of every ram that opposes it.
فَلاso not صَرمُهُhis severing of ties يَبدوappears وَفيand in اليَأسِdespair راحَةٌrelief
وَلاand not وَصلُهُhis bond يَصفوbecomes unclouded لَناfor us فَنُكارِمُهso we vie with him in generosity
So his estrangement does not show—and in despair there is relief—
So its disconnection does not appear, and there is tranquility in despair,
nor is his bond with us unclouded, so that we might vie with him in generosity.
Nor does its connection become pure for us to value it.
