أَلاAh! مَنwho لِعَينٍfor an eye لاتَرىdoes not see صائِباًṢāʾib وَلاnor
وادِيَthe valley of الطَرفاءِal-Ṭarfāʾ (the tamarisks) إِلّاexcept that إِستَهَلَّتِit burst into tears
Ah, who will help an eye that never sees Ṣāʾib or
the valley of al-Ṭarfāʾ without weeping
بِماءٍwith water لَوif أَنَّthat المُزنَthe rain clouds جادَتpoured generously بِمِثلِهِwith its like
رَضيناwe would be content بِماwith what جادَتgave generously بِهِwith it مَنshe who تَوَلَّتِturned away
tears such that, were the rain clouds to pour their like,
we would be content with what she who turned away bestowed?
وَلِلعَينِand the eye has فَيضاتٌfloods إِذاwhenever ماذَكَرتُهاI remember her
وَلِلصدرِand the breast has بَلبالٌturmoil إِذاwhen العَينُthe eye كَلَّتِgrew weary
And the eye overflows whenever I remember her,
and the breast is in turmoil when the eye grows weary.
