I passed by the Euphrates, and my tears were stirred

At sunrise by the cries of mourning.

Then I said: chaste women lament hoarsely

Beside your cousin, the virtuous man.

No slain man has the clan ever lost

Dearer to the clan than Riyah.

The cupbearers gave him a draught of death—

A master of learning, a frequent winner with the gaming arrows.

When, O son of al-Khudayr, do you suppose Qays

Will call for caution among the horsemen?

You killed the chief of Qays, then said:

    “We shall mix a drunkard’s blood-money with a sober man’s.”

You lie! None accepts humiliation except

A base man of the clan, brazen-faced.
