جَزاكَmay He reward you اللَهُGod خَيراًwith good مِنas أَميرٍan emir
فَقَدfor indeed أَعطَيتَyou have given مِبراداًa refreshing woman سَخوناwarm
May God reward you well, O emir,
For you have given me a woman refreshing yet warm.
بِأَهليَwith my family as ransom ماhow أَلَذَّكِdelightful you are عِندَto نَفسيmy soul
لَوif only أَنَّكِthat you بِالكَلامِin speech تُعَرِّبيناyou speak Arabic
My family be your ransom—how sweet you would be to me,
If only you could speak Arabic!
كَأَنَّكِas though you were ظَبِيَةٌa gazelle مَضَغَتhas chewed أَراكاًarak (toothbrush tree)
بِواديin the valley of الجِزعِal-Jizʿ حينَwhen تُبَغِّميناyou murmur softly
You are like a gazelle that has chewed arak,
In al-Jizʿ valley, when you murmur softly,
بِحَيثُwhere يَكُنُّit shelters إِخريطاًbroom shrubs وَسِدراًand lote trees
وَحَيثُand where عَنِafter التَفَرُّقِseparation يَلتَقيناthey meet
Where the valley shelters broom and lote trees,
And where, after separation, they meet.
