ظَلِلناwe remained وُقوفاًstanding عِندَat بابِthe door of إِبنِthe son of أُختِناour sister
ظَلِلنا وُقوفاً عِندَ بابِ إِبنِ أُختِنا
وَظَلَّand he remained عَنِaway from المَعروفِkindness وَالمَجدِand glory فيin شُغلِpreoccupation
وَظَلَّ عَنِ المَعروفِ وَالمَجدِ في شُغلِ
We remained standing at the door of our sister’s son,
We stood still at the door of our sister's son
And he remained too busy for kindness and glory.
While he was busy with glory and generosity
صَفاًa smooth rock صَلَدٌhard and unyielding عِندَwhen it comes to النَدىgenerosity وَنَعامَةٌand an ostrich
صَفاً صَلَدٌ عِندَ النَدى وَنَعامَةٌ
إِذاwhen الحَربُwar أَبدَتbares عَنfrom نَواجِذِهاits molars العُصلِcrooked
إِذا الحَربُ أَبدَت عَن نَواجِذِها العُصلِ
A smooth, hard rock when it comes to generosity, and an ostrich
A hard rock at the dew, an ostrich
When war bares its crooked molars.
When war bares its claws
